China formally the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state situated in East Asia. It's the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC additionally claims the lands ruled by the Republic of China (ROC), a different political entity generally called Taiwan now, as a portion of it is land, including the island of Taiwan as Taiwan Province, Kinmen and Matsu as an area of Fujian Province and isles the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a section of Hainan Province, a claim that is contentious because of the complicated political standing of Taiwan.
Covering about 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-biggest state by land area, and either the third or fourth-biggest by absolute area, based on the process of measurement. China's landscape is vast and varied, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the dry north to subtropical woods in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges different China from Central Asia and South. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest on earth, run to the thickly populated eastern seaboard from the Tibetan Plateau.
